We Begin With Bile: The Forgotten Fluid That Runs Your Biology
For most of my life, bile was just a word I saw in medical textbooks and glossed over. No doctor ever mentioned it. No blood test ever pointed to it. And yet it was the missing key to my metabolism. The reason energy collapsed, hormones went wild, and digestion turned against me.
I had every symptom that screamed dysfunction: bloating after almost every meal, right-sided pain, chronic fatigue, hormonal chaos, crashing cholesterol, and lab results that somehow were always "within range."
Yes, always "within range", but barely. Hormones scraping the bottom, cholesterol free-falling, ratios off, thyroid markers hovering in the gray zone. Nothing technically abnormal. Nothing you could treat. But everything screams: not optimal. Not thriving. Just surviving. You wouldn’t call a car “fine” if the oil pressure was low, the engine sputtered, and the warning lights flickered on and off. And yet that’s exactly how mainstream medicine reads labs. In my book (coming soon) and future articles, I'll educate you on how to interpret these numbers correctly - how to see the relationships, understand optimal ranges, and decode what your body is really saying.
Now, I was told to eat clean. So I did. I cut fat. I drank green juices. I ate raw salads like they were medicine. I fasted. Nothing worked. Nothing held. The “better and cleaner” I ate, the worse I felt. My digestion fought me. My hormones cratered. My energy dissolved.
Eventually, I found the real problem: my system’s flow was jammed.
WHY BILE MATTERS
Bile is not a bonus feature. It’s not a tiny detail.
It’s the metabolic linchpin of digestion, detoxification, hormone clearance, nutrient absorption, and microbial balance.
Without bile:
· You don’t absorb fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E, K.
· You don’t break down fats into usable energy.
· You don’t clear estrogen or endotoxins or cholesterol metabolites.
· You don’t keep pathogens in check in the upper gut.
Bile is how the liver speaks to the digestive system. It is command and excretion. Instruction and flow. Without it, everything downstream collapses - slowly, then all at once.
THE SIGNS OF STAGNATION
No one told me bile could thicken. That it could slow down. That it could get sticky, dehydrated, reabsorbed, and toxic. But it does. Especially when:
You eat low-fat or fast
You’re hypothyroid
You’ve used hormonal birth control
You have gut infections or dysbiosis
You’re under chronic stress
Your cholesterol is crashing
Signs that your bile isn’t flowing:
Right upper quadrant pain or discomfort
Bloating after fatty meals
Acne that won’t clear
Constipation or inconsistent stools
Hormonal imbalance
PMS, irregular cycles
Intense food sensitivities
Low vitamin D despite sun
Low libido
Weight gain that resists dieting
Fatigue after eating
CAN YOU TEST FOR BILE?
There’s no single blood test that says “your bile is stuck.” But your body leaves clues. And if you know what to look for, you’ll see them everywhere.
Blood markers that can point to bile stagnation:
· Low total cholesterol (especially under 160 mg/dL)
· Low LDL cholesterol (under 100, especially in women)
· Elevated ALP
· Elevated GGT
· High ALT or AST (liver stress)
· Elevated bilirubin (slowed bile clearance)
· Low vitamin A, D, E, or K (fat-soluble vitamin malabsorption)
· Low zinc / high copper (classic estrogen and bile imbalance)
· High estrogen, low progesterone (bile helps clear estrogens)
Even if your labs are “normal” but your digestion is wrecked, your skin is erupting, your hormones are swinging, and you’re bloated after eating - you don’t need permission to suspect bile.
WHY NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT
Because they don’t measure it.
Because there’s no blockbuster drug for it.
Because it doesn’t fit into a diagnosis - it explains too much.
Your liver and gallbladder aren’t sexy. They’re not trendy. But they are the upstream masters of metabolic order.
You don’t heal anything - skin, hormones, gut, thyroid, mood - until bile flows.
WHAT I DID TO CHANGE EVERYTHING
I stopped obeying the cleanse-and-fiber cult. I stopped treating symptoms. I focused on:
· Warming the system with cooked, saturated-fat-rich meals
· Triggering bile release with bitter roots, taurine, salt, carbs
· Supporting thyroid and temperature so bile stayed fluid
· Using pectin and charcoal strategically to mop up the mess
My skin cleared. My cycle steadied. My appetite returned. My energy stopped crashing.
I finally unblocked the system that was begging to move again.
THE BILE PROTOCOL: LAYER ONE
This is not a one-pill fix. This is a layered protocol, built to match how biology actually works - fluidly, systemically, and in sequence. You restore metabolism and health the same way the body lost it: in layers.
We begin with the basics: foods, rhythm, and supplements that signal the body it’s safe to move again.
Important: Each phase typically lasts 2–4 weeks, but the timeline depends on your personal response. If symptoms worsen, slow down, adjust doses, or return to the previous layer. Expect occasional detox waves, looser stools, or fatigue as bile begins to move - these are signs of activation, not failure. I went through cycles of flare-ups too, especially when binders pulled more than I was ready to handle. We can address how to manage these in future detailed articles if you are interested.
Phase 1: Soothe and Stabilize
Goals:
- Reduce bile irritation
- Calm inflammation
- Support digestion with soft, low-residue foods
Foods:
- Mashed root vegetables (carrot, squash, potato)
- Soft-boiled or scrambled eggs in ghee
- Warm goat or cow milk with honey
- Cooked fruits: apples, pears, peaches
- Beet and carrot puree
- Bone broth, gelatin
- No raw greens, vinegar, or hard-to-digest meats
Supplements:
- Magnesium glycinate (evening)
- Taurine 500 mg (before dinner, supports bile acid conjugation)
- Vitamin E every other day (with food)
- Artichoke extract (once daily, with dinner)
Supportive Therapies:
- Heating pad on RUQ after meals or before sleep (20–30 min)
- Gentle abdominal massage clockwise
- Walk 10–15 min after meals
- Avoid fasting; eat every 3–4 hours
Other recommendations:
· Salted saturated fat with every meal (coconut oil, butter, ghee, eggs, dairy, beef tallow)
· Carbohydrates to lower cortisol and fuel liver glycogen (fruit, root vegetables, honey, squashes!!)
· Protein for taurine and glycine production (collagen, gelatin, liver, dairy, eggs, shellfish)
· Cooked, easy-to-digest meals - no cold smoothies, raw greens, or hard roughage
Phase 2: Stimulate and Flow
Goals:
- Gently stimulate bile flow
- Begin hormone clearance
- Continue liver nourishment
Foods:
- Add liver (2x/week)
- White fish, chicken thigh, ground beef
- Small amounts of cooked onion
- Warm cooked fruits and carrot salad
- Continue avoiding raw salads and vinegar
Supplements:
- Ox bile (125–250 mg with lunch and dinner)
- Keep taurine and magnesium, vitamin E
- Increase artichoke extract to 2x/day
- Continue magnesium, taurine, vitamin E
- Optional: sunflower lecithin with meals
Supportive Therapies:
- Castor oil pack on RUQ 3x/week (30–45 min)
- Maintain light movement after meals
- Use symptom tracker to monitor skin, digestion, and mood (You can build one yourself or download from my website (https://theracellab.com/resources), they are free).
Phase 3: Clear What Bile Mobilizes
· Add Activated charcoal (occasionally: 1-2 times a week, away from food/supplements, preferably 2 hours after last meal)
· Add Apple pectin or citrus pectin (gentler binder with metabolic benefits)
· Magnesium glycinate or bicarbonate (helps relax bile ducts, supports detox)
Nutrition:
· Increase calories: more potatoes, cheese, fruit
· Add pumpkin-apple purée, cooked quince
· Broth + cheese snack every evening
· No food processing, no new products
During bile protocol eliminate:
· Nuts, seeds
· All vegetable oils except olive oil (in microdose)
· Citrus fruits, vinegar, fermented foods
· Chocolate, coffee
· Alcohol, sugar on an empty stomach
Let’s open the gates!
This isn’t everything. This is the first layer. Bile flow is what restores rhythm, appetite, libido, clarity. It’s what clears the trash and builds the foundation for real hormone repair.
If you’re bloated, inflamed, stuck, fatigued, breaking out, and your labs are "normal" start with bile.
Because until bile flows, nothing else will.

Can I assume that a removed gallbladder is treated as a stuck one with the addition of something like Tudca?
I’m so curious why you recommend cutting citrus & chocolate/coffee??
